Prof Ajmal terjemah Mathnawi Rumi....

Tun Dr Mahathir ikon membaca

By : Faruq Ghozi One of the secret why Tun Mahathir become one of the most malay genius leader in the world is because of his carving in reading books. Malays dislike to read proportionate with Japanese they love to read. We dont realize the behalf and benefits that we can obtain in reading. Beside gain of knowledge, reading helps us to :

1.Exercises your mind. Reading bends loosens and supple the mind. It helps in keeping the muscles of the brain in good shape. 2.Gives satisfaction Reading gives immense satisfaction to a person. Nothing can be more satisfying than to sit with your child and read him a story book, or to see him grow with the fairy tales. 3.Expands the imagination Reading expands the imagination of a person. One becomes more confident, self assured of his ability to understand and appreciate the various aspects of life. The mind is channelized to think about the different aspects and then questions and derives conclusions about them. 4.Enhances the ability to focus The mind of a reader is more concentrated and focused about various aspects of life. When the mind is focused it has the capability to be more attentive in practical situations of life. As a result the body and mind of such people remain calm; they look at the problem objectively and are better decision makers. 5.Produces efficient orators Only those who know something of quality can speak and gains respect and recognition from people. People with scarce knowledge about a subject cannot be good orators. 6.Improves knowledge Reading improves a person’s knowledge about various fields of life. This knowledge base helps a person to make correct decisions in different situations of life. 7.Helps to achieve goals in life People who develop reading habit since childhood are better able to decide their goals in life. Reading also helps them in achieving these goals because once a person gets in love with books it is easier for him to just switch over from general reading to their course books. 8.Teaches the art of living Reading biographies of legendary individuals help the reader to learn the art of living. 9.Helps to accept other cultures and religions. Just having information about other cultures might create misconceptions about their traditions and mythologies. A thorough reading gives clarity about the fundamentals of other religions. This helps the person to accept them in a better and overwhelming manner. Congratulations to Tun Mahathir on his enthronement as a National Read Icon suitable with his interest as a book lover.

VS pemikiran literal-tekstual

Anda pula bagaimana? :) istilah ''salafi'' yg cuba mereka monopoli juga perlu dimurnikan. Banyak istilah2 yg mereka cuba monopoli antaranya ''salafi' - 'sunnah'' 'ahli sunnah wal jamaah'' -''hadith'' ''dakwah sunnah'' 'ikut nabi'' ''ikut nas'' 'kembali kpd sumber asal'' 'kembali kpd al-quran dan hadith'' dll.....maaf ya sahabat2 sekuliah Universiti Facebook yg pro pemikiran sebegitu.Kita diskusi baik2.Jangan tuduh sy pro aqal-neo muktazilah-pendokong islam liberal dll tau.Jangan marah sy kata kalian punya pemikiran literal-tekstual dll tau.Sebab memang pun kalian berfikiran sedemikian.....opps! ????

El General

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1QhfyKQsj0&feature=share I start my talk with «Bismillah», «La ilaha illa Allah», «Muhammad Rassoul Allah». I've come alone and unarmed, but my heart is overflowing with faith. In my mind there are a lot of words (to say), a lot of dreams (to perform) and I think about many things. I beg mercy for those who died as a Shahid From Dorra (the little boy who was killed by Jews in Palestine) to Saddam Hussein (in Tunisia some people consider him to be a Shahid), For those who sacrificed themselves and called for the victory of Islam. If it were in my hands, I'd sacrifice my blood and cross the border (of Tunisia to go to war with my brothers) And I'd hold hand in hand with them and stop only when death overtook me. I'd like to go forward at least one step. Enough for us to remain motionless! Enough! What a long time we've been hiding the truth and have been forgetting about the rights of The One to Whom we worship. Arab, Muslims, with hot blood, I'm an adherent of my religion, the Qur'an and the Messenger. If you live happy life, with peace in mind, without any trouble, I want you to remember that there are others besides you, who have been crushed by life. Arab, Muslims, the same like you, who lives in humiliation. Until when will you be silent, looking at injustice? *** Allahu Akbar! The banner of Islam always comes first! Allahu Akbar! Shahid (I aspire to be a Shahid): nothing but death can stop me! Allahu Akbar! In all sincerity I shout «Allahu Akbar!», «Allahu Akbar!» *** I'll fight you with my songs, neither with weapon, nor with baguette (so-called revolution of bread in 1984). Today I have chosen to be a Mujahid: either victory or death of a Shahid. With words «Allahu Akbar» and «Islam is above all» none can get on my way. I obey only Allah. How long, brother, will they control us, rule us and sit on our necks? How long will we be silent, won't talk and not feel? My dream is to see Arabs who fight along with the Muslims army Until liberation, on Jihad, until death. And when I die as a Shahid, I'll be pleased with myself, lying in the ground. Enough to shoot us, to exterminate on people! Arabs have become slaves, and Jews - lords. They've done what they wanted, insulted the Prophet, burned the Qur'an, But Arabs remain silent, and people talk about this (in vain). It's time for us to unite, to join our hands And with words «Allahu Akbar» to live like Muslims till the Judgement Day. *** Allahu Akbar! The banner of Islam always comes first! Allahu Akbar! Shahid (I aspire to be a Shahid): nothing but death can stop me! Allahu Akbar! In all sincerity I shout «Allahu Akbar!», «Allahu Akbar!» *** My heart has been grieving about Iraq and Palestine for many years. We see injustice and humiliation. Where are you, Arabs, Muslims When you see, that small children are shot, the rulers line their pockets, And Jews rule the world from West to East? Look what is happening now! The Arabs suffer humiliations, insults, We're being treated like a puppet on a string, We've been robbed, they've made "a pot- belly" (on our money), We've been exploited, and then thrown out. We've been misled by using temptations. Our young men adore all that Allah has forbidden They liked Marilyn Manson And have forgotten about the Quds and Baghdad. But these remains in the past, the glory of Arabs will revive tomorrow. The holy book «Qur'an» is the law for us! I'll lift the banner of Islam only! Today I declare war with «Bismillaah», «Allahu Akbar» Against those who rejected Islam, those who have insulted and humiliated (us). Insha Allah, I'll be one of those Shahids about whom it's told in the Qur'an. There is the light of Allah on my brow, and my heart is armed with faith. *** Allahu Akbar! The banner of Islam always comes first! Allahu Akbar! Shahid (I aspire to be a Shahid): nothing but death can stop me! Allahu Akbar! In all sincerity I shout «Allahu Akbar!», «Allahu Akbar!»

Fethullah Gulen dan perjuangan pendidikan

Fethullah Gulen dan gerakan ‘Hizmet’ nya sangat menitikberatkan aspek pendidikan-keilmuan dan hal-hal keintelektualan.Bahkan Elisabeth Ozdalga dalam Redeemer or Outsider?:The Gulen Community in the Civilizing Process menggambarkan gerakan ini ‘more intellectual in their religious practices than other Islamic communities in Turkey’.Selain itu juga Elisabeth Ozdalga mengungkapkan seperti berikut:’’Reading, individually or in groups is characteristic of the Gulen community’’.

Zeki Saritoprak pernah mengulas pengaruh Fethullah Gulen seperti berikut:- ‘’His influence comes not only from his charismatic religious personality but also from the many different educational and social institutions that have been established by his many admirers, who take his advice and recommendations very seriously’’ Sekolah, universiti dan institusi pendidikan yang didirikan oleh pengikut Fethullah Gulen ini tidaklah terhad semata-mata di Turki bahkan ia didirikan di serata dunia.
Zeki Saritoprak dan Sidney Griffith dalam tulisan mereka,’Fethullah Gulen and the ‘’people of the book’:A voice from Turkey for Interfaith Dialogue’ memetik kata-kata Fethullah Gulen seperti berikut:- ‘’Our ongoing activities are for the good of all humanity. They should not be considered limited to our own country,Turkey’’ Kupasan Zeki Saritoprak dalam tulisannya,’’An Islamic Approach to Peace and Nonviolence:A Turkish Experience ‘’ ini turut menarik untuk direnungi bersama:- ‘’For the peaceful world of the future,Gulen encourages his admirers to establish educational institutions in and outside of Turkey. He gives special importance to the areas where ethnic and religious conflicts are escalating, such as Albania,Kosovo,Macedonia, the Philippines,Banda Aceh,Northern Iraq and Southeastern Turkey. The schools have played remarkable roles in decreasing levels of conflict in these areas. While visiting Macedonia in summer 2004,I had a chance to visit one of these schools, established by Turkish businessmen who are great admirers of Gulen.I was told that during the conflict between Albanians and Serbs, both sides would bring their children to the school as a haven of peace in order to deter their involvement in such a conflict. These schools serve children from all backgrounds, regardless of their religious and ethnic differences.’’ Lester R.Kurtz dalam tulisannya ‘Gulen’s paradox:Combining commitment and tolerance’ pula memetik komen yang dinyatakan oleh Dr Thomas Michel(General Secretary of the Vatican Secretariat for Interreligious Dialogue)ketika mengadakan lawatan ke sekolah milik ‘Hizmet’ di Selatan Filipina Pulau Mindanao: ‘’In a region where kidnapping is a frequent occurrence, along with guerrilla warfare, summary raids, arrests, disappearances, and killings by military and para-military forces, the school is offering Muslim and Christian Filipino children, along with an educational standard of high quality,a more positive way of living and relating to each other’’ Manakala Thomas Michel,S.J. dalam tulisannya ‘Sufism and modernity in the thought of Fethullah Gulen ‘ mengambil ulasan Elizabeth Ozdalga terhadap sekolah yang didirikan oleh pengikut Fethullah Gulen seperti berikut:- ‘’the main objective (of the education provided in these schools) is to give the students a good education, without prompting any specific ideological orientation. One basic idea of Gulen’s followers is that ethical values are not transmitted openly through persuasion and lessons but through providing good examples in daily conduct’ Lester R.Kurtz dalam tulisannya ‘Gulen’s paradox:Combining commitment and tolerance’ pula menyatakan:- ‘The purpose of the schools’ movement, therefore is to lay the foundations for a more humane, tolerant citizenry of the world where people are expected to cultivate their own faith perspectives and also promote the well being of others’ Kemampuan gerakan ‘Hizmet’ pimpinan Fethullah Gulen dalam mendirikan sekolah, universiti dan institusi pendidikan di seluruh dunia banyak dibantu oleh komitmen dan keikhlasan menyeluruh pendokongnya dalam ‘infaq’-sedeqah dan waqaf tanpa bergantung kepada bantuan kerajaan bahkan lebih kepada permuafakatan masyarakat madani-rakyat keseluruhannya.

Gerakan ‘’Hizmet’’ Fethullah Gulen

Elisabeth Ozdalga dalam tulisannya ‘Redeemer or Outsider?:The Gulen Community in the Civilizing Process’’ menggambarkan gerakan ‘’Hizmet’’ pimpinan Fethullah Gulen ini sebagai :’’ ‘one of the most influential revivalist movements in modern Turkey’’ manakala Ihsan Yilmaz dalam tulisannya ‘State, law, civil society and Islam in contemporary Turkey’ merujuk gerakan ini sebagai ‘’The largest civil movement in the country’’ . Menurut Elisabeth Ozdalga dalam ‘Redeemer or Outsider? The Gulen Community in the Civilizing Process’ :- ‘The Gulen movement is a conglomerate of networks concentrated around four main clusters of activities:economic enterprises;educational institutions;publications and broadcasting;and religious gatherings’

Fethullah Gulen (1)

Akhirnya saya tamat juga membaca jurnal ‘The Muslim World:A journal devoted to the study of Islam and Christian-Muslim relations Special Issue:Islam in contemporary Turkey:the Contributions of Fethullah Gulen’.Jurnal ini saya dapat percuma hadiah dari sahabat Turki tatkala saya dan sahabat-sahabat yang lain(rombongan kembara Malaysian Turkish Dialogue Society(MTDS) mengunjungi kedai buku milik pengikut pemikiran Fethullah Gulen di Istanbul,Turki.Kebetulan dalam jurnal ini turut termuat artikel tulisan Profesor Emeritus Dato Dr Osman Bakar, seorang tokoh yang cukup saya kagumi pemikirannya.Saya sering mengikuti ‘kuliah’nya di International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies (IAIS) Malaysia.Siapakah sebenarnya Fethullah Gulen?

Menurut Ihsan Yilmaz dalam tulisannya ‘State, law, civil society and Islam in contemporary Turkey’:-‘’Fethullah Gulen is an Islamic Scholar,thInker, writer, and poet’’.

Apa khabar calon-calon jenazah..?

Apa khabar anda yg masih hidup?Apa khabar calon-calon jenazah sekalian?Sihat? ....:)

menjelang PRU 13...

menjelang Pilihanraya Umum ke 13 Malaysia, marilah kita bersama-sama meluruskan pemikiran kelompok yg menolak secara total sistem demokrasi-pilihanraya(haram-haram-haram-geng planet haram),yg tidak tahu bezakan antara kerajaan-negara dan parti pemerintah-penguasa,yg mati hidup semula akan pertahankan mati-matian sesiapa jua yg dinamakan 'pemimpin negara',yg menempelkan ayat Quran-Hadith dgn kefahaman literal untuk membela 'ulil-amri' mereka,'intelektual palsu' 'profesor serba tahu' yg tenggelam -hanyut -syok sendiri dalam alam bikinan mereka sendiri dan ramai lagi....:)..Bagaimana dgn mereka yg belum daftar mengundi?Bagaimana pula dgn mereka yg daftar mengundi tapi tidak turun mengundi?Bagaimana pula.....(tambah sendirilah...)....:)

ABIM(Joh L.Esposito-Ibrahim Moosa)

Saya membaca bahagian Summary of the Open Debate:Report by John L.Esposito, buku 'Rethinking Islam and Modernity:Essays in Honour of Fathi Osman''(edited by AbdelWahab El-Affendi) yg baru dibeli(guna baucer buku).Terkejut bila baca muka surat 144 jumpa kenyataan tentang ABIM. Profesor John L. Esposito kata :- ''It seems to me that the theme of the conference is most appropriate,Islam and Modernity. For,as was said yesterday by Fathi Osman,ABIM and Ennahda represent, from my point of view, organizations or movements par excellence who have grappled with the question of the relationship of Islam to Modernity. The founders of the organizations, and the current leaders embody this approach, and we have seen that already in some of the presentations that have occurred, for example Shaikh Rashid’s presentation yesterday…’’ Dan,Profesor Dr Ibrahim Moosa dalam muka surat 155 bab yg sama pula berkata:- ‘’Sometimes one keeps quiet in the interest of politeness or decorum, but I believe,as someone said, evil flourishes when good people do nothing. That continues in the vein of what Tamara Sonn has said, dictatorship of the mind, and the whole question of rethinking and critical thinking in Islamic thought. There is a lot of dictatorship of the mind because,I think, intellectual critiques are not taking place.Movements like Ennahda or ABIM might want to start the re-thinking.But the mainstream Islamist thinking, including the modern Islamist paradigm,is not engaged in real re-thinking...’’

Wahai kaum katak sedunia,bersatulah!....Hidup katak!

Tan Seri Arshad Ayub....mahasiswa

Tan Seri Arshad Ayub(antara pengasas UITM-mantan Timbalan Gabenor Bank Negara,Pengerusi Lembaga Pengarah Universiti Malaya dan Pro-Canselor Universiti Teknologi MARA) menasihati mahasiswa supaya memberi fokus sepenuhnya kepada ILMU sewaktu berada di universiti.Beliau menyelar sikap segelintir pimpinan gerakan mahasiswa yg terlalu ghairah(mahu menjadi hero-catat nama dalam sejarah gerakan mahasiswa) kepada isu2 luar kampus-menggunakan pendekatan ''radikal-ekstrem'' lantas melupakan perjuangan isu2 dalam kampus.Beliau mencabar gerakan mahasiswa berbahas-berdebat-lantang bersuara dalam isu2 dalam kampus(walaupun mencabar pentadbiran universiti) asalkan kebajikan mahasiswa dalam kampus terbela....Fikir-fikir-fikir,memang banyak isu dalaman kampus tak selesai sebab 'pejuang-pejuang mahasiswa' sibuk mahu menjadi hero di luar kampus...:)

Profesor Emeritus Dato Dr Osman Bakar....

FOKUS kepada kerangka besar PERJUANGAN.Beliau tidak peduli cercaan pihak yg mencela beliau kerana masih menjaga persahabatan utuh dengan pimpinan Pakatan Rakyat(contoh Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim) walaupun beliau berkhidmat dalam sebuah pusat 'think tank' kerajaan.Beliau antara orang belakang tabir menasihati Perdana Menteri sebelum ini(Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi),mewujudkan pelbagai institusi pendidikan dalam dan luar negara, penasihat belakang tabir ngo-ngo dalam-luar negara, aktif dalam 'gerakan Islam'(ABIM) dan tetap aktif membina jambatan kasih sayang sesama manusia tanpa mengira latar belakang bangsa-agama,pemikirannya menjadi rujukan pelbagai pihak di luar negara(pernah masuk ranking "The 500 most influential Muslims ) tapi tetap merendah diri dan sangat menghargai anak muda.Apapun yg berlalu beliau tetap fokus kepada perjuangan jangka panjang-mencetak generasi baru-hal-hal keilmuan-keintelektualan-kesarjanaan-kecendekiawanan-pendidikan-pendidikan-pendidikan-pendidikan-pendidikan-pendidikan-pendidikan-pendidikan-..... Aku bersama perjuangannya! :)

Jaringan persahabatan...

curah kita punya idea dalam tulisan-ungkap pemikiran,buat ulasan buku-galak orang baca buku,fokus sesuatu idea,bahasa ada kaitan dgn pemikiran,penulis punya tanggungjawab sosial-intelektual-jurubicara masyarakat,belajar 'critical thinking'-retorik-balaghah,penulis perlu banyak membaca,analisis tulisan2 pemikir,3P(Penulisan-Pemikiran-Pembacaan),selalu bersama buku-cinta buku-menulis suatu keindahan,pemikiran kreatif,penulis tak perlu takut dgn kritikan,tulis berdasarkan pengalaman-pembacaan...

Kepada anak muda yg masih mencari-mengkaji pemikiran tokoh2 pemikir ,semoga kalian tidak menjadi seperti kelompok anak muda yg aktif dgn seni mempertahankan diri(silat-kung fu-karate-teakwando dll) yg marah bila tok guru mereka dihina-dikritik ''Belasah mereka!''(kata anak murid) padahal tok guru mereka 'cool'-'rileks' sambil berkata 'bertenang!'maafkan mereka!' :)

STRATEGI + FOKUS kepada kerangka besar perjuangan.Geng 'Hizmet' Fethullah Gulen dan NGO2-Yayasan(waqaf) pengikut aliran pemikiran Badiuzaman Said Nursi(Turki) mampu mendirikan sekolah-universiti-asrama penempatan berkualiti tinggi, memiliki stesyen tv-radio-surat khabar-majalah-kedai buku, kilang besar menyimpan stok bantuan kemanusiaan ,menghidupkan wacana2 pencerahan-intelektual-penulisan-penerbitan,turun padang aktif dlm misi2 kemanusiaan,organisasi2 perniagaan-ekonomi dan lain-lain lagi agenda PERUBAHAN.Kita pula bagaimana ya?Tidur?Bergaduh-Bertengkar-Berbalah-Bersengketa?Menyalahkan orang lain?Memperbesar-besarkan isu kecil-remeh-temeh?Memperkecil-kecilkan isu besar-utama?

PTPTN?

Anwar Ibrahim : ''Argument for Democracy: The Triumph of the People''

Speech by Anwar Ibrahim at the India Today Conclave 2012, New Delhi, 16th March, 2012

In the words of the great Asian hero Jose Rizal: “Humanity will not be redeemed while reason is not free.”

And to this, we might add that reason will not be free as long as freedom itself remains incarcerated. The irony is that even as they rob us of our liberties and undermine our constitutional foundations, the powers that be audaciously trumpet their legitimacy as the duly elected representatives of the people.
That is why I would like to preface the discourse today on the “despotism of the majority”. These are not tin pot dictatorships but seemingly legitimate governments who have come to power through the ballot box – we shall take their legitimacy at face value for the moment. Having attained power, and enjoying it for protracted periods of time, they develop dictatorial tendencies on account of numerical strength in the legislatures.

This despotism is thus manifested in the abuse of the legislative process. Laws are then bulldozed through Parliament regardless whether they have been vehemently opposed. The voice of the people is drowned by the frenzied proclamation of power. Oppression reigns.
With this concentration of power, checks and balance essential for a democracy become neutered. The voices of dissent are quickly and ruthlessly stifled as the state apparatus is employed to silence political opposition.

The institutions of power such as the judiciary, the police, the public prosecutor and the anti-corruption agency are then treated as the personal and private army for the powers that be to perpetuate their rule.

Let us go deeper into the essential aspects of a democracy. The electorate should be allowed to make a free choice, free from any threat, inducement or promise or outright bribery for this would impact on the electoral outcome.

A “level playing field” would include equal access to a free media, open debates and a conduct of elections that can stand up to international scrutiny.

There must be an independent judiciary that will function as an effective check and balance whether it be against the despotism of the majority or against the arbitrariness of Executive action.

So much for the platitudes as the detractors would be quick to point out that these ideals if realised fully would lead to an “excess of democracy”. According to this view, allowing for greater participation in the democratic process could endanger the system itself. The demands of civil society in particular could well lead to a systemic failure. Constraints must be introduced to prevent social problems from going out of hand or else political authority itself will be delegitimized.

We don’t know whether to laugh or cry when this kind of ideology, masquerading as scientific research findings, is foisted on us. The fact is that we don’t need political scientists with post-doctoral degrees to tell us what autocrats and leaders of sham democracies have been telling us all along.
Their refrain is familiar enough: too much democracy is bad, society needs stability, chaos will ensue, and hence there must be a trade off. Give up some of those liberties or at least take a moratorium on exercising them for the sake of the collective good.

A quick refresher of our Asian history will bear out my contention. Hardly three decades had gone by after attaining independence before the euphoria of new found freedom evaporated under new despots. Their disdain for freedom and human rights outmatched their colonial predecessors.

Fast forward to the turn of the century and into the new millennium and we can see how closely conjoined this ‘excess of democracy’ thesis is to the Asian Values thesis. Their pretext was that Asians preferred societal stability as opposed to the messiness of democracy and individual rights. They argue that democracy is particularly unsuited for the attainment of certain economic objectives such as the eradication of poverty and bringing up the nation up to speed to compete globally.

Conveniently, therefore, dispersed power sharing was replaced by big government and the dismantling of institutional checks and balance. In other words, the separation of powers which had been written into their constitutions became blurred in the name of societal progress and economic advancement.

Indeed the advocates of a strong paternalistic government being the better alternative to liberal democracy have now jumped on the Occupy Wall Street wagon. They say all the pious platitudes preached about Western democracy have been now exposed for their hollowness. They say these old world democracies all suffer from similar social problems the root of which can be traced to this ‘excess in democracy.’
Our position is clear. Accepting this is akin to permitting autocracy via the back door. The detractors have missed the point entirely. Occupy Wall Street is indeed an indictment, even a categorical statement. But it is not against democracy at all. It is clearly an indictment against the evils of market fundamentalism, and while it is true that most democracies also espouse market capitalism, it is false logic to equate one with the other.

In fact, there is an inherent contradiction in the call for liberty, equality and fraternity, if by liberty we mean free markets alone. This is because a free market is based on competition, and competition, being a zero-sum game has no truck with equality.
Again, as OWS clearly demonstrates, market fundamentalism engenders inequality so much so that even the bastions of capitalism such as America and Britain no longer ask whether states ought to intervene in order to reduce these inequities.

The invisible hand has remained invisible so often that governments in these established democracies have not only intervened but have in many cases “gone overboard” in bailing out sinking corporations and “too big to fail” entities. The beneficiaries of such intervention are therefore the fat cats of Wall Street themselves. Main Street continues to be the sacrificial lamb. This can hardly be called social justice.
Are we suggesting that socialist regimes should replace liberal democracies? The answer is obvious: Inequalities of wealth, power and status are not exclusive to free markets. While socialist states do have more egalitarian policies, the trade off is unacceptable. Equality need not be attained on the altar of freedom and democracy.

A more equitable distribution of wealth need not be done at the expense of fundamental liberties. These liberties are of paramount importance but as Amartya Sen has argued, other considerations including that of economic needs are just as vital. The compelling question is this: Intense economic needs can be matters of life and death, so why should they be lower than that of personal liberties?

In this regard, a comprehensive support system for the poor and economically marginalized is absolutely necessary. Governments must be committed to the principle that a more equitable distribution of income is a fundamental precept for the realization of social justice. Freedom and democracy will continue to be pious platitudes where there is no commitment to undertake integrated plans for poverty reduction in the long run.

We don’t have to wait for Occupy Wall Street to tell us that economic power must be checked by the principles of governance and accountability. We know too well that abuse of power and corrupt practices are not committed only by the public sector.

So the answer to OWS is social justice, not less democracy. The social problems are real but they are not there because of an excess of democracy. They are the consequences of an excess of greed.
The public anger, frustration and disillusionment is real. OWS demands a more egalitarian deal. It is a demand for social justice. Seen in this light, OWS needs to be weighed in under the broader rubric of the Arab Spring, which we would now use as a metaphor for the aspirations of people who want freedom and democracy.

The fires for freedom and democracy ignited by this spring are still raging. We are still basking in the euphoria of this upheaval even as the newly minted democracies are trying to find their bearings.
If the Arab Spring is to have any lasting impact, the stakeholders must ensure that in place of their fallen dictatorships and autocracies, constitutional democracy will be the hall mark of the fruits of the revolution. Entrenched in these democracies must be the protection of minorities with their rights and liberties safeguarded. There will naturally be overlapping claims to entitlement of rights or competing goals but the test of true democracy lies not in curbing them but in finding a consensus that would represent inclusivity and accommodation.

We cannot overstate this reminder: This new wave of democratization must herald a democracy of a truly constitutional kind coming as a package with entrenched safeguards and power to be exercised with full accountability and transparency.

This caveat is crucial. This is because democracy may be exploited as a façade for the aggrandizement of power and wealth unless and until constitutional safeguards are put in place. And this must come hand in hand with good governance, transparency and accountability.

The rule of law and the protection of fundamental liberties are key features of a free and democratic society. To protect these basic rights, an independent judiciary is essential without which there can be no effective check and balance. If judges are to be independent of political authority, then their positions must be protected by the constitution. Appointments to high judicial office must also be transparent and done in the most scrupulous manner.

No leader in his right mind should ignore the call for reform, freedom and democracy. But there are still governments who think they can merely pay lip service to these imperatives by orchestrating elaborate PR exercises. Let us remind them that their machinations fool no one.

The road to democracy has never been smooth. The Arab Spring has come after a long winter of discontent. A heavy price had to be paid. It continues to be paid with the blood of innocent lives. But this is a spring that defies the four seasons. There are still many who may have too much at stake to let us reach our destination.

But for those who cherish freedom and democracy, this spring will keep the fire burning. Courage, honour and dignity will see us through. It is a matter of time. Our day of triumph will come.

Thank you.

Transcript of Rachid Ghannouchi’s speech at CSID-Tunisia on 2 March 2012 on “Secularism and Relation between Religion and the State from the Perspecti

In the name of God, prayers and peace be upon His Messenger, his household, companions, and supporters.

Ladies and gentlemen, brothers and sisters may God’s peace and blessings be upon you.

I thank the Centre for the Study of Islam and Democracy for giving me the opportunity this evening to speak to this distinguished elite of Tunisian men and women and those coming from abroad. I am not here to teach you anything, since the subject we are here to discuss has no set instructions to be delivered but rather only points of view to be deepened and efforts to reach a common ground that would enable our elite to reach a consensus or at least a quasi-consensus.

Our topic is quite problematic in the sense that it deals with the Islam’s relationship to secularism. Is this relationship one of conflict and disaccord or one of harmony and overlap? Related to this question are issues such as Islam’s relationship to governance, the relation between Islam and Law, which are all contentious matters.

It seems that when we speak of secularism and Islam, as if we are talking about evident and clear concepts. However, a non-negligible amount of ambiguity and multiplicity of understandings surround these concepts, in that we are not talking about ‘a’ secularism but rather a multitude of secularisms as is the case with Islam, by virtue of what is proposed in the arena, we are faced with various understandings of what it means.

Although secularism seems as if it was a philosophy and the fruit of philosophical reflections and meditations which came to fight idealist and religious outlooks, it is not so. Secularism appeared, evolved, and crystallized in the West as procedural solutions, and not as a philosophy or theory of existence, to problems that had been posed in the European context. Most of these problems emerged following the Protestant split in the West, which tore apart the consensus that had been dominant in the Catholic Church, and imposed the religious wars in the 16th and 17th century. It was thus that Secularism and/or secularization began.

This leads us to ask the following question: are we in need of secularism in its procedural aspect? Perhaps the most important idea in the ensemble of these procedures is the idea of the state’s neutrality i.e. towards religions and its abstention from interfering with people’s consciences. Whereas, the state’s scope or jurisdiction is limited to the ‘Public Domain’, religion’s scope extends to the ‘Private’. In the United States religious interference in the public domain is evident, despite the differentiation that exists there remains a significant religious influence. Their leaders’ speeches are laden with religious content and references, and religion is debated in all electoral campaigns where it manifests itself in issues such as prayer in schools and abortion. This in reality is due to the fact that America was founded by evangelical pilgrims fleeing with their religion from the Catholic Church’s persecution in Europe. It is for this reason that the U.S. is looked at as the Promised Land, the land of dreams mentioned in the Torah and Gospels.

As the Franco-American thinker Tocqueville once remarked that the Church is the most powerful party in the United States. This is by virtue of the huge influence that it enjoys, though this is not the case in Europe. Whereas the number of those who can lead prayer in the US exceeds 50%, in Europe it does not reach 5%.

In the European context, also, there are differences in the state’s relationship with religion between the French heritage and Anglo-Saxon one, whereby in the UK the Queen combines the temporal and the religious powers. The complete separation is the one that is associated with the French experience, which resulted from the clashes that took place in French history between the revolutionaries’ state and the Catholic Church. Even in Europe, therefore, we are not dealing with one experience in secularism, perhaps for our purposes, since our elite is influenced by the particular French perspective (particular even for Europeans) where religion is totally excluded from the public sphere and the state considers itself as the sole guardian of national identity. This exclusion of the religious and its symbols from the public domain is what lead France to be the only country that refused the covering of heads for Muslim women, while we don’t see such a crisis in any other European country over the issue of headscarves. This is exclusively due to the particular nature of the relationship between state and religion in France which was the result of a particular historical experience.

We in turn are not faced with one understanding; perhaps the most important procedure invented by the secular worldview on this level is the state’s neutrality. In other words, the state is the guarantor of all freedoms be them religious, political or otherwise. And the state should not interfere in favor of this or that party. We pose the following question now: Is Islam in need of such a procedure? i.e. the state’s neutrality towards the various religions.

Islam, since its inception, has always combined religion with politics, religion and state. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was the founder of the religion as well as the state. The first pledge of allegiance made by the group of Madina who came to Mecca was a religious pledge to believe in Allah and his Messenger. But the second pledge was to protect the Muslims, even by sword, should al-Madina be attacked. Al-Madina, and this expression is of the utmost importance, used to be called Yathrib before becoming Al-Madina (The City) which implies that Islam is not merely a religion but also carries a civilizational meaning. It is a transferring of people from Bedouin life to urban/civilizational life. This is why ‘Bedouinization’ was considered a great sin once urbanization had been achieved. No wonder then that wherever Islam went it established cities and our country hosts the oldest city built by Arabs in North Africa. Therefore, The City founded by the Prophet (pbuh) is a clear indication that Islam is a religion of civilization, whereby it shifted those warring tribes from a Bedouin level to a civilized one and united them around a state.

The Prophet (pbuh) was a an imam in the religious sense as he lead prayers in mosques, and at the same time a political imam that arbitrated people’s disputes, lead armies, and signed various accords and treaties. Of relevance to us is the fact that upon his arrival to Medina he established a mosque and put in place a constitution that was called Al-Sahifah. You have precedents here Mustapha! [In reference to Mr Mustapha Ben Ja'afar, President of the Constituent Assembly, who was present in the audience]. This Sahifah, which is one of the oldest constitutions in the world, contained a bundle of covenants regulating the relations between Meccan immigrants and their hosts (these were considered as one nation) and the Jewish tribes of Madina (also considered a nation). Al-Sahifa considered these two religious nations as comprising one political nation and entity that is distinct from others. The most important concept offered by such scholars as Muhammad Salim Al ‘Awwa and Muhammad ‘Umar is the distinction between the religious and the political as corresponding to the separation between state and religion.

The distinction between that which is political and that which is religious is clear in the Sahifah in that Muslims are a religious nation (ummah) and the Jews another, but the combination of the two plus other polytheists made up a nation in the political sense. This distinction can be witnessed in the Prophet’s dealings even if the boundaries were not always clear. Whereas the religious is the sphere of observance and obligation, the political is the sphere of reason and Ijtihad. At times when the ambiguity confused the companions, they would ask the Prophet (pbuh) whether this is divine revelation (wahy) or a mere opinion. In the case of the former they would obey, and when it is the latter they may differ and offer alternatives. On more than one occasion did the companions differ with the Prophet (pbuh) in his capacity as the head of state, and Sheikh Tahar Ben Ashour has dealt in detail with the topic of what he called ‘Prophetic Statuses’.

One day the Prophet (pbuh) passed by a group in Medina cross-pollinating palm trees and said: ‘I do not see the benefit of doing so.’ The Medinan people thought that that was divine revelation and stopped treating their trees which made their harvest of that year of a lesser quality. They asked him why he ordered them to do so, and he replied: you are best placed to know what is beneficial for you in your worldly affaires. Therefore, it is not the duty of religion to teach us agricultural, industrial or even governing techniques, because reason is qualified to reach these truths through the accumulation of experiences. The role of religion, however, is to answer the big question for us, those relating to our existence, origins, destiny, and the purpose for which we were created, and to provide us with a system of values and principles that would guide our thinking, behaviour, and the regulations of the state to which we aspire.

So, Islam since its inception and throughout its history has not known this separation between state and religion in the sense of excluding religion from public life. And Muslims, to this day, have been influenced by Islam and inspired by its teachings and guidance in their civic life, with the distinction remaining clear. This distinction between the religious and the political is also clear in the thought of Islamic scholars/jurists. They have distinguished between the system of transactions/dealings (Mu’amalat) and that of worship (‘Ibadat). Whereas the latter is the domain of constancy and observance i.e. reason cannot reach the truth, the former is the domain of searching for the general interest, for Islam came to realize people’s interests as confirmed by such great jurists as Al-Shatibi and Ibn ‘Ashour. These scholars have agreed that the highest objective of all divine messages is to establish justice and realize people’s interests, and this is done through the use of reason in light of the guidelines, objectives, values, and principles provided by religion. Thus, there is a domain of transactions/dealings which is constantly evolving and represents the sphere of variables, and there is the domain of creed, values, and virtues which represents the sphere of constants.

Throughout Islamic history, the state has always been influenced by Islam in one way or another in its practices, and its laws were legislated for in light of the Islamic values as understood at that particular time and place. Despite this, states remained Islamic not in the sense that their laws and procedures were divinely revealed, but that they were human endeavours open to challenge and criticism. States have also practiced a degree of neutrality, and when they tried to interfere and impose one understanding on Muslims, as happened in the Abbasids state, it sparked revolution. It is mentioned that al-Mansour had become concerned with the multitude of religious views and interpretations emanating from the same religion and feared their divisive effect on the state. So he sent for Imam Malik and asked him to amalgamate all these in one to unify people’s outlooks. Imam Malik produced his famous book al-Muwatta’, with which al-Mansour was greatly pleased and wanted it to become a law that binds all Muslims. This horrified Imam Malik and asked for it not to be made so, because the Prophet’s companions have travelled to different lands and took with them much knowledge, so allow people to choose what they see fit. This is why we see that one school of thought is dominant in the Maghreb, while another is so in the Levant, and yet another in Egypt…etc

It is due to the absence of a church in Islam that what remains is the freedom of thought and interpretation. This will naturally lead to a diversity in interpretation, and there is no harm in that except when we need to legislate, at which time we are in need of a mechanism, and the best mechanism that mankind has come up with is the electoral and democratic one which produces representatives of the nation and makes these interpretations a collective as opposed to an individual effort. Again, in the absence of a church representing the sacred on earth and a spokesperson of the Qur’an, the nation is the only manifestation of divine will through its interactions and not any particular scholar, party, or state.

When al-Ma’moun (Abbassid Caliph) wanted to impose one interpretation of the Quran and one particular understanding of Islamic creed (that of the Mu’tazili school), Imam Ahmed Ibn Hanbal revolted and refused the state’s attempt to dominate religion. This lead to him being persecuted and tortured, but in the end he managed to turn public opinion against the state and force al-Ma’moun to cede.

While the problematique in the west revolved around ways of liberating the state from religion and lead to destructive wars, in our context the problem is one of liberating religion from the state and preventing it from dominating religion, and keeping the latter in the societal realm, open to all Muslims to read the Qur’an and understand it in the manner that they deem appropriate, and that there is no harm in the plurality that is combined with tolerance. But should Muslims be in need of laws, the democratic mechanism is the best embodiment of the Shura (consultation) value in Islam.

It is of the utmost importance that our heritage is devoid of a church. Maybe only our Shi’ah brothers hold the belief in a religious institution, but in the Sunni world there is no such a thing save for a council of scholars which are usually in disagreement and hold different views. For this reason, we are in need of scholars and intellectuals to debate and study our issues in a climate of freedom and accept that the legislative institution is the ultimate authority by virtue of being elected.

There is a debate that is currently ongoing in our country between secular currents which may be described as extremist and Islamist ones which may be described in like manner. One would like to impose their understanding of Islam from above using state tools and apparatuses and the other aspires to strip the state, educational curricula, and national culture of all Islamic influences. At a time when the whole world, including the Islamic world, is witnessing a religious awakening, and having seen the role played by the Catholic Church in the development of Eastern Europe, starting with the efforts of Pope John Paul II, and also the role of the Russian Orthodox Church in the success of Putin’s presidential campaign. At such a junction in time, it is unreasonable to object to religious influence on the state’s cultural and educational policies. In fact, we do not need do impose Islam because it is the people’s religion and not the elite’s, and Islam has not endured for so long because of states’ influence but rather due to the large acceptance it enjoys among its adherents, in fact the state has often been a burden on religion.

As I said, many of those who belong to the Islamist current and others fear the religion’s emancipation from the state to be left as a societal matter. Why does the state train Imams? Why does it control mosques?

The issue of the state’s neutrality involves a great deal of risk and adventure. If what is meant by the separation between religion and state is that the state is a human product and religion a divine revelation as the distinction was made clear in the context of the early Muslims between the realm of revelation (wahy) and what was the realm of the political, then it is ok. But if what is mean is the separation in the French sense or in accordance with the Marxist experience then we may engage in a dangerous adventure that may harm both religion and state. The total stripping of the state from religion would turn the state into a mafia, and the world economic system into an exercise in plundering, and politics into deception and hypocrisy. And this is exactly what happened in the Western experience, despite there being some positive aspects. International politics became the preserve of a few financial brokers owning the biggest share of capital and by extension the media, through which they ultimately control politicians.

In this context, people are deeply in need of religion and its spiritual and moral guidance which would enable them to distinguish between right and wrong (halal and haram). And in the absence of a Church that monopolises the definition of what is halal and haram, this task is left to be debated by the elite of thinkers, the people and the media.

Should religion be entirely emancipated from the state and politics, this would also carry some risks whereby things would get out of control and social harmony would be endangered. The way to do it, therefore, is to find a balance that would guarantee people’s freedom and rights, because religion is here to do exactly that. To achieve this balance, we need to go back to the issue of distinguishing between religion and politics and adjust the parameters of what is constant in religion and that which is variable. We need our legislators to be well acquainted, educated and versed in religious values, so that when they are legislating they do not require the tutelage of religious scholars and authorities, and the same goes for politicians. There is no value to any religious observance that is motivated through coercion. It is of no use to turn those who are disobedient to God into hypocrites through the state’s coercive tools. People are created free and while it is possible to have control over their external aspects, it is impossible to do so over their inner selves and convictions.

This is exactly why we saw two models in dealing with issue of the headscarf/veil, the first is a veil that is dictated and imposed by the state and the second is a veil forbidden by it. Once I was in a Muslim country’s (in reference to Saudi Arabia?) airport where all women were covered, but as soon as the plane took off the veils flew away with it. This is a clear failure of that country’s educational system, which was unable to guarantee people’s religiosity except through coercive tools. In Ben Ali’s Tunisia, women were forbidden from wearing the veil and express themselves in whatever appearance they saw fit, also through the state’s coercive means. This was also a failure.

The primary orbit for religion is not the state’s apparatuses, but rather personal/individual convictions. The state’s duty, however, is to provide services to people before anything else, to create job opportunities, and to provide good health and education not to control people’s hearts and minds. For this reason, I have opposed the coercion of people in all its forms and manifestation and have dealt with such controversial topics such as al-Riddah (apostasy) and have defended the freedom of people to either adhere to or defect from a religious creed, based on the Qur’anic verse that says: ‘there is no compulsion in religion’.

There is no meaning in forcing people to become Muslims, the Muslim nation has in no need for hypocrites who manifest belief and conceal disbelief. Freedom is the primary value through which a person adheres to Islam, so he who announces his shahadatayn (‘I declare that there is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is his final Messenger’) does so on the basis of free choice underpinned by awareness and conviction. In this manner, the state is Islamic insofar that it assures its actions are in accordance with Islam’s values without being subjected to the tutelage of any religious institution for there is no such a thing in Islam. Rather there is a people and a nation who are the decision makers through their institutions.

When the Meccan people objected to Muhammad’s religion, he asked them not to interfere with his preaching activities and to allow him the freedom to communicate his message to the people. Had the Meccans accorded the Prophet (pbuh) the freedom of expression, he would not have immigrated and left his homeland. But because his message was so powerful, they could not offer an alternative to counteract it. This is why Muslims consider Islam’s proof to be so powerful that there is no need to coerce people, and when the voice of Islam proclaims ‘Produce your proof if ye are truthful’ this challenge is being proposed at the heart of the political and intellectual conflict.

Thus, the greater part of the debate taking place nowadays in our country is a misunderstanding of such concept as secularism and Islam. We demonstrated that secularism is not an atheist philosophy but merely a set of procedural arrangements designed to safeguard the freedom of belief and thought as Abd al-Wahhab al-Masiri distinguished, in his writings, between partial and total secularisms. An example of the latter would be the Jacobin model in French history. In their war on priesthood, the Jacobins’ raised the following slogan: “strangle the last king with the entrails of the last priest.” This is a French specificity and not the absolute definition of secularism. There is also an ambiguity regarding Islam, for there are those who believe that Islam can only be victorious by confiscating people’s freedom and imposing prayers, fasting, and the veil through force. This would be far from being a success, for Allah Almighty had considered hypocrisy to be the greatest crime, and the hellfire to be the eternal abode of Hypocrites.

The fact that our revolution has succeeded in toppling a dictator, we ought to accept the principle of citizenship, and that this country does not belong to one party or another but rather to all of its citizens regardless of their religion, sex, or any other consideration. Islam has bestowed on them the right to be citizens enjoying equal rights, and to believe in whatever they desire within the framework of mutual respect, and observance of the law which is legislated for by their representatives in parliament.

This is my understanding of things, and my view with regards to Islam’s relation to secularism. I hope that I have touched on the main issues, and I thank you profusely for your attention.
